Raspberry Leaf Tea

What is raspberry leaf tea?

Raspberry leaf tea is a tisane or infusion made by soaking raspberry leaves in hot water. There are several species of raspberries, but red raspberries are preferred for teas. The red raspberries, which are native in Europe and Northern Asia, contain more vitamins and minerals compared to other raspberry species.

Preparing raspberry leaf tea

Dried young shoots or leaves are used for raspberry leaf tea. Then, it is soaked or steep in freshly boiled water for 5 to 10 minutes. It has an astringent, black tea flavor with surprisingly no hint of raspberry taste. One to two teaspoons are needed to make a cup of raspberry leaf tea.

Benefits of raspberry leaf tea

Historically, raspberry leaf tea is used to aid delivery among pregnant mothers who are about to give birth. (see ).Today, raspberry leaf tea is used to promote health. It has the flavor of black tea, without containing caffeine.

Raspberry tea is rich in vitamins and minerals, and is also especially rich in antioxidants. Studies show that raspberry has huge oxygen radical absorbance capacity (value that measures how much damaging oxygen radicals it can remove from cells). People who are stressed and convalescing from sickness are recommended to drink raspberry tea to aid recovery.

Red raspberry leaves are especially rich in folate which is essential for proper mental function, prevention of anemia and reproduction.
Raspberry fruits and leaves are also found to contain various phenolic compounds, anthocyanins and flavonoids that can protect the body from cancer and oxidative stress.

Raspberry leaf tea is a good astringent and mouth cleanser. It is a good remedy for sore throats, gingivitis and cankers in the mouth.

Although historically recommended to pregnant mothers, modern studies failed to support its proposed benefits. Studies supporting the efficacy of raspberry leaf tea to improve uterine tone and reduce necessity for cesarean section births have poor methodology with unconvincing results. It might also pose harm to pregnancy if taken during the first trimester. But still, people with caffeine sensitivity will find raspberry leaf tea a great alternative to black tea.

Hotel Meli International, Vienna

By Pari Syal Photography: Courtesy the architect

The newly opened Danube City (DC) Towers, Austria’s highest building by Parisian architect Dominique Perrault houses the Spanish hotel chain Meli International with the -57 Restaurant & Lounge’ offering a breathtaking 360-degree view over Vienna.

Launched on the same day as the Towers, Feb.26, 2014, the new -Meli Vienna’, is as striking as the building itself. The uniquely designed 250m high skyscraper has a spectacular glass facade and the hotel is anointed with floor-to-ceiling windows, offering an amazing view of the Danube River and the city skyline.

Your very firts steps into the lobby and up the spiralling staircase take your breath away. As the arresting element of the lobby restaurant, -The Flow’, the imposing staircase also serves as an entre to the large ballroom on the first floor. The hotel boasts 1,079 sq m of flexible event space, grand ballroom, and 8 partially combinable conference rooms, apart from being completely equipped with signature restaurants and state-of-the-art amenities, integrated with cutting-edge technology.

Meli Vienna with its new standards of international lifestyle occupies 18 of the 58-floor DC Towers and houses 253 exquisite rooms, including 40 design suites and 200 sq m Presidential Suite with 180-degree panoramic views. The top two floors of the tower are occupied by the -57 Restaurant & Lounge’ that offers a spectacular 360-degree view over Vienna.

The interior is a fusion of minimalist design and monochromatic colour schemes in a purist ambience. An intense sensory experience prevails as one experiences a play of chiaroscuro elements throughout, prancing on a material and textural palette that is rich, and uber chic. The quiet, subdued colour schemes, fine materials and the visual qualities of the folded faade, which gives the tower its distinct liquid, immaterial character, reflecting on a malleability constantly adapting to the light, are ingeniously mirrored in the interiors.

In fact, the physicality of the interior spaces is tangible with its exposed or rather -not-hidden’ structural framework. Stone and metal used in lobbies and circulations contribute to the tower’s generous and reassuring physicality. -The aim is to get the basic horizontality of the city and the public space to coincide with vertical trajectories,- says the architect.

The DC Tower is also the first sustainable or -Green Building’ in Austria.

Recipe For Deep Fried Pickles

Not one person was more surprised than I to discover the delicious taste of a perfectly deep fried pickle! Pickles – Good. Deep Fried Food – Good. Deep Fried Pickles – HEAVEN!! I would personally like to thank the person who was so bored as to experiment and come plan this wonderful concoction!

The coating for this is got a little bit of kick to it, although it could be toned up or down according to taste. I have tried many iterations of the recipe and this is the one I favor. Also, I have included the recipe for an awesome dipping sauce!

Deep Fried Pickles

1/4 cup milk

2 eggs

1 cup bread crumbs

1/4 cup flour

1/4 grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 teaspoon garlic salt

1/4 teaspoon lemon pepper

1/4 teaspoon all season spice

1/4 teaspoon cayenne

10 Hamburger Chip pickles

1. Combine milk and egg in one bowl. Combine bread crumbs, parmesan cheese, and all seasonings in a different bowl. Now with a third bowl, put in your flour.

2. Coat each pickle chip in the flour first, remove excess flour.

3. Dip each floured pickle into your egg mixture followed by the bread crumb mixture.

1. Put on baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Bake at 400 degrees Farenheit around Twenty minutes or until golden brown, turning once.

Dipping Sauce

* 2 eggs

* 1/2 teaspoon salt

* 1/2 lemon, juiced

* 2 cups vegetable oil

* 1/4 cup ketchup

* 2 tablespoons sweet relish

* 1 tablespoon horseradish

* 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

* 1 teaspoon vinegar based hot sauce

* 2 tablespoons chopped scallions (green part only)

* 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

* 1/2 teaspoon salt

* 1/2 lemon, juiced

In a blender – put in eggs, salt, and first half a lemons juice. Blend briefly to combine. While blending slowly, add oil in a slow, steady stream until well blended. Transfer to a non-metal bowl and add all remaining ingredients. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

I hope you love these deep fried pickles just as much as I do!

The Gujarati food and Cuisine

At a time when more and more Restaurants in Delhiare looking at foreign shores for inspiration, it is a delight to come across one that looks inwards. Saatvik at Select City Walk in Saket offers Indian food in an Indian ambience the Indian way. Though the restaurant hosts a food festival every month, this month’s Gujarati food festival deserves greater attention, firstly because you do not always get to taste authentic Gujarati food and, secondly, even when we do get it at fairs and exhibitions, the ambience is more of street food than the real Gujarati fare. Under the circumstances, Saatvik deserves a lot of credit for paying attention to its ambience with a dash of clay and hay on the walls besides colourful ribbons, flags and the likes. One can, for a moment, think one is sitting in Bharuch rather than Delhi.Food, too, retains the actual Gujarati flavour – spices being on the lighter side and a pinch of sugar in almost every dish creating a distinct and unique combination of sweet and spicy. Sugar and spice is the essence of Gujarati cuisine.One can start with snacks like khandvi and dhokla, which are served with a tomato chutney, and move on to dahi ka shorba. (Buttermilk tempered with curry leaves and spinach, it is supposed to aid digestion.) Moving on to the main course, a thali is served with five different dishes consisting of makai na bharta (American corn kernels tossed in chopped masala), undhiyo (assorted seasonal vegetables paired with muthiya), Gujarati kadi dhokali (a fusion of traditional Gujarati kadi stewed with crisp dhokla), traveti dal (a combination of three different dals) and bhakri (Guajrati roti made with whole wheat flour). There’s also rice pulao. In the dessert section, aamrakhand (mango flavoured sweet creamed curd cheese) is provided, which again combines sweet and sour.
